The Best DJ Mashups

Through my time of DJing and attending live events, there has always been one thing that has stood out to me: a good mashup of two songs that I love.

Mashups are widely accepted in DJ culture and can be a great way to show off your skills using two different instrumental tracks to create a whole new track, but what is the best way to do this, and is there anything that can help when making mashups?

DJ.Studio is designed to streamline the mashup process, giving you an easy-to-use timeline layout, harmonic key analysis, and precise editing without the steep learning curve of traditional production software.

In this post, I'm going to show you some of the best mashups out there, some good songs that can be used in your mashups, and how you can use DJ.Studio to create and improve your mashups.

TL;DR - DJ Mashups#

  • There are a lot of great mashups ready for you to use in your sets

  • Some songs are great for using in a mashup and will get your crowd excited

The Top 10 DJ Mashups#

Whether you're just getting into mashup mixing or you're on the hunt for inspiration, exploring DJ mashups is a great way to understand what makes two tracks work together.

Here are 10 interesting mashups that have been created which you can draw inspiration from, take a look below:

  1. Freelance Hellraiser – “A Stroke of Genius” (Christina Aguilera vs The Strokes) - This one arguably kicked off the 2000s mashup era. An Indie rock instrumental paired with Aguilera’s Pop vocals.

  2. Girl Talk – “Play Your Part (Pt. 1)” - Girl Talk is great at layering dozens of samples in a single track, and this one is a great example. Expect everything from Top 40 hits to underground classics merged into a party starter.

  3. Danger Mouse – “Encore” (Jay-Z vs The Beatles) - From the Grey Album, this mashup of Jay-Z’s The Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album is great for showing contrast, timing, and vibe.

  4. Party Ben – “Boulevard of Broken Songs” (Green Day vs Oasis vs Travis vs Eminem) - A surprisingly emotional mashup that combines alternative sound with hip-hop attitude. It’s one of those “this shouldn't work, but it does” moments.

  5. Mighty Mike – “Imagine This” (John Lennon vs Daft Punk) - A mashup of “Imagine” over Daft Punk’s “Something About Us.” A perfect example of how mashups can create entirely new textures.

  6. DJ Earworm – “United State of Pop” series - Each year, DJ Earworm blends the Billboard Top 25 into a single mega-mashup. These are great for any music lovers out there.

  7. Isosine – “Radioactive in the Dark” (Imagine Dragons vs Fall Out Boy) - This rock-EDM hybrid mashup takes the energy of both bands and smashes them together. Great for more alternative or dramatic DJ sets.

  8. Mashd N Kutcher – “Do It Now” (Mashup Live Performance) - This Australian duo became famous for mashing up random TV quotes, audience shouts, and chart-toppers in real time. Their live mashups are funny, chaotic, and brilliant.

  9. White Panda – “Midnight Life” (Kanye West vs M83) - An atmospheric take on mashup culture – combining M83’s sounds with Kanye’s confident flow. It’s moody, spacey, and smooth.

  10. Kap Slap – “Starry Eyed Surprise” (Various Artists) - Kap Slap’s college-party mashup is a great one. This track’s high-energy transitions and builds make it a feel-good favorite.

Listening to mashups like these helps you to understand structure, layering, energy matching, and vocal placement; all key skills when making mashups of your own.

With DJ.Studio, you can easily experiment with ideas like these, lining up stems and acapellas to create your own sounds; you can use these in your DJ mixes.

The Top 10 Songs for DJ Mashups#

When you’re creating a mashup, song selection is everything. Some tracks have that combo of structure, tempo, and cultural weight that makes them perfect for combining with others.

I’ve put together this list based on years of experience producing and mixing. These songs consistently pop up in iconic mashups for a reason – they just work.

  1. Daft Punk – “One More Time” - A dance music classic. With its steady beat, filtered chords, and nostalgic energy, this track is great for a mashup. It plays nicely with both house and pop tracks.

  2. Missy Elliott – “Get Ur Freak On” - The stripped-back beat and vocals make this a great acapella choice. You can layer it over everything from grime to glitch-hop.

  3. Michael Jackson – “Billie Jean” - The bassline is instantly recognizable, and the groove is flexible enough to support a wide range of other genres. Plus, the vocal phrasing gives you tons of room to play with.

  4. Adele – “Rolling in the Deep” - Surprisingly versatile. The powerful vocal line can lift everything from deep house to breaks. Works best when you contrast it with something more upbeat.

  5. OutKast – “Hey Ya!” - Adaptable to any genre, “Hey Ya!” adds a flair to any mashup. You can clash it with techno, funk, or even trap and still get something fun.

  6. Britney Spears – “Toxic” - The string riff is great. Whether you're chopping the hook or dropping the vocal over a bassline, it is guaranteed to turn some heads.

  7. Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg – “Still D.R.E.” - The piano riff here is legendary. Try using it as a backing bed for acapellas or reworking it into a trap flip, as a personal favorite of mine, I can confidently say this will get the people going.

  8. Nirvana – “Smells Like Teen Spirit” - Perfect for rock/electronic hybrid mashups. If you want some energy and rebellion, this one’s unbeatable.

  9. Kanye West – “Stronger” - Sampling Daft Punk already gives this one an edge for mashups, but the vocal flow and tempo make it a nice bridge between hip-hop and EDM.

  10. Lady Gaga – “Bad Romance” - Melodic, dramatic, and recognizable – this is a great vocal that can elevate most backing tracks.

Here are just a few examples of songs that can work within a mashup; the thing each of these songs have in common is that they are known and loved by many.

But knowing these songs is just the start of it, you need something that can help mold these songs together in your mashups, especially if you're looking to mix different genres.
