Sample lanes in DJ.Studio#
There are two ways to control the sample lanes in the Studio.
Quick toggle: click the View button in the Studio toolbar, or the eye icon in the top right of the Studio. From here you can show or hide the sample lanes and the input lane.
Add samples to your project#
- Click the Samples tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Click the +Add Sample button.
- Use the file locator, or drag and drop a sample onto the window.
- Wait a moment while DJ.Studio analyses the key and BPM of the imported samples.
- Your samples appear in the sample browser.
- Drag a sample to the spot you want on any sample lane. Click a sample in the browser to preview the audio, or click the three dots to open the Sample Details window.
Work with samples on the timeline#
- Move a sample: drag the nameplate earlier or later in time. Samples snap to the grid points automatically and are beat-matched to the BPM.
- Move several at once: hold Shift, click the grey background of the sample lane and drag to select. The headers of the selected samples turn yellow. Grab any yellow header and drag them all together.
- Delete a sample: click it and press Delete or Backspace, or right-click and choose Delete Sample.
- Extend a sample: hover over the lower half of the sample frame until the arrow cursor appears, then drag to lengthen or shorten it.
- Loop a sample: hover over the top bar of the sample until the circular arrow cursor appears, then drag to loop it.
- Solo a sample lane: click the headphone icon at the top right of the sample track controls. Click it again to unsolo.
Volume, fades and effects#
Every sample has its own independent volume control.
- Click the sample you want to edit.
- Go to Effects and move the volume slider.
- A white line appears on the sample. Click the line to create movable volume points and automate the volume.
Drag the automation points in the two upper corners of a sample to create a fade in or a fade out. Repeat the same steps on the EQ and filter controls to add more automation.
Samples linked to the incoming track#
In DJ mix mode, a sample you add to a transition is automatically connected to the incoming track. If you move or reorder tracks in the playlist, the sample moves with them. In Mashup mode samples are independent and are not linked to any track.
Create samples from your tracks#
Sample a vocal, a drum break or any other section straight from the timeline.
- Hold Shift and drag the mouse over the section you want.
- Right-click the selection and choose Save Sample. You can then add it to your mix, or save it to your sample library only.
- Or choose Copy to sample lane to copy the selection directly to a lane.
Create samples with stems#
With the Stems feature you can isolate one layer of a track and turn it into a sample. This is how you build an acapella for a mashup or a remix.
- Hold Shift and drag over the section you want.
- Right-click and choose Copy Vocals, Drums, Bass, Melody , Drums+Bass or Instrumental
- The isolated layer appears as a new sample on the sample lane, ready to move anywhere on the timeline and to automate.
The Sample Details window#
Open it by clicking the three dots behind a sample in the sample library. Here you can rename the sample or download it to your computer, and:
- Quantize Sample: beat-match the sample to the BPM grid, or play it at its original speed. Turn it on for rhythmic samples like drum loops, and off for sounds you do not want changed, such as a voiceover.
- BPM: see the detected BPM and change it by hand.
- Trim: use the yellow trim bar to set the start and end of the sample and cut out unwanted gaps.
